Hosted by Peter Halley, expect a night filled with celebrations, heartfelt tributes, exciting auctions & raffles, and plenty of fun as we commemorate a decade of impact. Most of all, let’s raise a glass to the person who’s work we continue to honour, Dr. Jack Hand!
Radio Station VOWR Celebrates Centennial with Fundraiser Concert
Being the oldest city in North America, St. John’s has a deep history of centennial milestones. VOWR, the city’s pioneering radio station – and one of the oldest in Canada – will add to this history by marking its 100th anniversary in July. This is a momentous occasion for the province’s cultural heritage. Housed at Wesley United Church and originally created to broadcast church services to those who could not attend in person, it eventually broadened from this role into a music station with a wide variety of shows featuring different genres, from jazz and classical to country and gospel. Today, VOWR boasts a very large audience reach and unprecedented popularity as a station that stays true to the tradition of classic radio while also keeping up with new trends and technology. Its volunteers span in age from 25-85, making it a truly age-diverse organization.
To commemorate this special occasion, VOWR will be hosting a 100th Anniversary Concert at Holy Heart Theatre on June 1, 2024. It will feature legendary NL artists such as Con O’Brien, Pamela Morgan, John Curran, Bob McDonald, Anita Best, Mick Davis, and many more. Chris LeDrew will be musical director, leading an all-star backing band through an evening of well-loved classics. All proceeds will go to the running of this non-profit, all volunteer-run station that relies solely on donations for its operations.

Take a Chance on ABBA on June 9, 2024, with St. John’s Choir! The doors of Gower Street United Church will open at 6:45pm for your convenience and the performance will start at 7:30pm. Money, Money, Money! Tickets are available at Holy Heart Theatre Box Office and at the door. Advanced ticket purchase through Holy Heart Theatre Box Office is highly encouraged. Tickets are general admission and free for children 10 years old and under. Dancing Queens – please feel free to dust off your bell bottoms and sky-high platform boots for the night!
The St. John’s Choir is proud to work with Artistic Director, Stephen Candow, as well as Associate Conductor and Accompanist, Dr. Philip Roberts. The St. John’s Choir is excited to feature the St. John’s Chamber Choir, under the direction of Dr. Philip Roberts along with some other special guests (to be announced soon).
Eva Kuper’s compelling life journey reflects the harrowing experiences of survival during the Holocaust. Born in 1940 in Warsaw, Poland, she and her family endured the challenges of wartime atrocities, including living in the ghetto and escaping deportation. Eva’s father played a crucial role in her survival, orchestrating daring rescues and finding refuge for her in the care of Franciscan nuns in Zakopane. Post-liberation, Eva faced identity challenges and prejudice due to her Catholic upbringing. Eventually relocating to Canada, she learned of her Jewish heritage, marking a transformative chapter in her life. Join us to hear Eva Kuper’s powerful narrative of resilience, survival, and self-discovery.

Enjoying its 18th season on CBC Radio One, The Debaters is the hit show where comics go toe-to-toe in a battle of laughs and logic. Hosted by Steve Patterson, international headliner and two-time winner of Canada’s Best Male Stand-Up. The Debaters is a combustible mix of sharply crafted comedic rants and hilarious ad-libs. The engaging format is part stand-up, part quiz show and part comedy competition with the live audience picking the winners. Each show will feature five unique debates. It will be taped for radio.
